After you've beaten all five bosses and finish a run you'll unlock access to the game's final boss as well as the option to play more runs with tougher versions of the regular bosses. Additionally, once a boss is defeated it won't appear in future runs. One interesting aspect of Undermine is that there are challenges you can perform to skip all but the final boss. There a five different themed zones each with it's own set of monsters as well as a boss at the end. Slimes will try to steal any gold available in a room so you must be quick to collect it all or try to knock them away. The caverns are filled with gold which you'll want to mine to spend at shops or save for upgrades after your run. You come armed with a pickax which you can swing at enemies or throw at a distance like a boomerang. Gameplay is the heart of Undermine which takes the form of a dual-stick shooter except for half the time you'll be utilizing melee attacks. There are a lot of layers that help explain why Undermine works so well so lets dig right in!
#UNDERMINE REVIEW UPGRADE#
The rogue-lite elements that allow you to upgrade between runs help make sure you are always making progress. The action can get intense but the controls always feel very solid. I eventually picked up a copy on my PS4 and as I started playing it the game far exceed any expectations I may have had. It looked like it had a really fun cartoonish art style and gameplay seemed very similar to The Binding of Isaac. I was quite fascinated the first time I saw gameplay of Undermine from a random streamer on Twitch. By bumblebug | Review Date: August 6, 2021
